Here at Elmfield House we take the time to ensure that each and every treatment is tailored to suit your individual needs. We always consider your current oral health status, along with the results you want to achieve, to create absolutely the best treatment plan for you.
Our first priority is prevention and intervening with any dental issues early on. Tooth decay is something we work hard to prevent but if it does occur, we stop it from getting worse by removing the decay and replacing it with suitable filling material. However, sometimes further treatment is needed where damage is more pronounced.
Effective tooth restoration procedures like crowns and bridges are often used where simple fillings are insufficient or where previous restoration attempts have failed. These well-known and trusted treatments can restore teeth back to their comfortable, natural-looking state.
A crown is a dental device used when a filling would be, or has been, an ineffective tooth restoration solution. It is placed over the top of a prepared tooth in order to make the tooth stronger, to improve its aesthetics, and to return it to a normal shape.
Once the crown has been placed it will cover the entire tooth and will sit on and above the gum line. Carefully crafted and fitted crowns are not noticeable as a 'fake tooth' and blend excellently with your natural teeth.
There are many different reasons why you may require a dental crown. Common reasons crowns are used are:
The leftover parts of a cracked tooth needs strengthening
A tooth with a large filling needs strengthening
A dental bridge needs an anchor
To improve how a tooth looks
To complete dental implant treatment
To complete root canal treatment
Dental crowns can be made from a variety of effective materials, all which have their own separate advantages.
Porcelain Crowns
Porcelain crowns tend to look natural and beautiful compared to metal based crowns. They keep their colour and can be made to match surrounding teeth so there's no giveaway that the tooth is not real.
Gold Crowns
Gold crowns are incredibly strong and durable and work well as a stand-out alternative to a natural looking tooth.
Metal Bonded Crowns
Only slightly less natural in appearance than 100% porcelain crowns, metal bonded crowns provide extra durability and strength to a crown structure. The porcelain tooth still looks attractive and natural, but the gum line can appear dark due to the underlying metal structure.
Dental bridges span the area where a tooth is missing with an aesthetically pleasing natural tooth, or teeth. They are typically held in place by being anchored using crowns, to the natural teeth each side of the gap.
Bridges can be used as an alternative to partial dentures and are considered to offer a more robust solution to replace missing teeth. However, there is the downside that a bridge usually requires preparation of the teeth adjacent to the gap to support the dental crowns which anchor the bridge in place.
